FRANK KITTS UNDERGROUND MARKET

Verdant Design together with Eco Fabric will be back at the markets again this weekend (8th and 9th October) with some new and replenished stocks of cool cushions.  Including this fantastic Wee Jubilee cushion adeptly named by its American creators.

Did you know Verdant Design pre-washes all its plant based fabrics like Cotton, Linen & Hemp to make into its cushions.  This way you can avoid any Dry-cleaning which uses harmful chemicals.  There is nothing wrong with good old eco soap and water. Normally natural fibre cushions are not pre-shrunk, which means if you do happen to wet wash them you run the risk of a shrunken deformed cushion, and of course you don't want that.   Here at Verdant it is all about choosing things that have the least harm to the environment. If it means our hands get wet washing some fabric so you get cushions that you can look after (not the dry-cleaner) then so be it.  Builds the muscles anyway.

Where: The very-much-transformed-on-the-weekends carpark under Frank Kitts Park
When: Saturday and Sunday 8th and 9th October 10am until 4pm

See you there.

IDEA  1  PICKING COLOURS--                O  O  O  O  O
Borrow the colours and combinations from
your wardrobe favourites.

Our favourite clothes are usually the ones, that flatter us.  Remember the playtime trick of putting a buttercup under your chin to see if you like butter, and the way that buttercup reflected up onto your chin.  This colour casting upon your skin can be flattering or unflattering.

Our skin colour tends to either be a warm tone or a cool one.  Matching warm coloured clothing with warm skin tones or cool with cool is flattering.  For example a red that is almost orange will look good on someone with warm skintones, and a red that is heading to purple will look good on cool skin tones.

There are some colours that are universally flattering to all skin colours, because they are neither very warm or very cold.  Colours such as aubergine and true red, peach pink and teal  The colours of your favourite clothing may also have been chosen because they have some kind of resonance with you, evoking a particular mood perhaps.

So if you feel good wearing these your home can also give a similar effect. You can also get ideas from the combinations of colours, and also sometimes the proportion of each colour the designer has already tested out for you.

Curtain Insulation

Posted 14th May 2011
B L O G:
C U R T A I N  I N S U L A T I O N

If you are one of the many in New Zealand who do not have double glazed windows in your home, like myself.  A decent curtain lining is the best and cheaper alternative to replacing your windows.  12% of heat is lost through single glazed windows, while 24% is lost through walls and 42% through the roof.  (Home NZ, apr/may 2011) In practical terms after insulating a roof, nice thick curtains are the next best thing to insulate. I am sure most of you would agree that pulling off your plaster board or even sarking in an old villa like my own is quite disruptive and not to mention expensive, if you aren't planning on doing any major renovations anytime soon.

However, the main curtain lining that is normally offered is a 'thermal' lining.   These conventional linings and the coatings on your typical ready-mades are unhealthy for you and your home.  They are made by coating fabric with a paint-like acrylic, which omits harmful VOCs especially when the sun hits it.  Just smell the chemicals coming off a new roll of the stuff or even when you open a pack of ready-mades and you will see what I mean.  Thermals, also do not 'breath' and you get that typical growth of mould and mildew on the back of your curtains, creating another health hazard in your home.   A much healthier alternative to 'Thermal or Blackout lining' is a woven blackout lining and/or the use of bumf.  Currently there are a few woven blackouts on the NZ market, but only one is Oeko-Tex certified meaning the manufacturer has an environmental management programme.  Another bonus with this is you can wash it in water, so no dry-cleaning bill and no chemicals.  (Although please take into account the wash-a-bility of your main curtain, which if a natural fibre will most likely shrink in the length)

Yes woven blackout lining costs more than 'thermal', but is thicker and in my personal experience warmer and therefore better for your family's health in the long term.
